Hey Reader,
Remember that feeling when a part of you wants something, and a part of you wants another?
We all experience that internal tug of war between our BETTER selves and our LESSER selves
The part of you that wants comfort and the part that knows you’re capable of more.
Most people struggle to fulfill their potential because they haven’t been able to tune out that lesser voice.
Today, we’ll discuss how to master mindful connection with the better YOU to achieve your highest abilities.
💭 The power of choosing on purpose
In the 1997 NBA Finals, Michael Jordan woke up sick with a high fever.
He felt weak and could barely stand.
Game 5 was that night, and the Chicago Bulls needed him.
Every logical part of him could have stayed in bed.
He could have sat that game out, and no one would’ve blamed him.
It would’ve totally made sense.
But that night, he suited up anyway.
He played 44 minutes, scored 38 points, and led the Bulls to a crucial win.
I don’t see it as just Utah they were playing against; it was more Jordan against Jordan.
The version that wanted the body to rest vs the self that wanted to lace his shoe and get out the door.
And that night, the better self won.
🧠 The voice that feels like growth but isn’t
We all have two voices in our heads.
One naturally desires safety, and the other likes to explore what we’re capable of.
A self that desires challenge vs. a self that wants comfort.
The self that wants excellence vs. the self that wants ease.
The self that’s willing to stretch vs. the one that’s scared to fail.
Funny how the lesser self can actually disguise itself as the better self in our personal and professional lives.
It shows up as planning when it’s procrastination, being strategic when it’s fear of not being ready, or “stability” when it’s really stagnation.
The crazy part is our success hides the traits of the lesser self in fame and achievements.
But deep down, you know you’re yielding to comfort, to safety, to a compromise standard...
All the while, the higher self still nudges you to wake up.
It still tells you how much more capable you are. It still tells you to take one bold step.
And until you learn to spot the lesser voice, it can hold you back from fulfilling your purpose.
❤️ Your internal compass is already pointing the way
Every time you feel pulled between the two voices, one is trying to lead you.
It knows your priorities.
It knows what you promised yourself about the person you’re becoming.
It knows your big, vivid vision.
In fact, both voices know.
But when you’re clear on your non-negotiables, you stop compromising with the part of you that wants to keep you safe.
It becomes easier to spot when the “lesser you” is disguising itself as strategy, boundaries, or planning.
Because now you’re choosing, not reacting.
Choosing to act instead of holding onto fear.
Choosing to take risks instead of holding onto old patterns that no longer serve you.
And that clarity to choose gives you a level of control and unshakable confidence.
You say yes faster to the things that matter and no faster to the things that don’t.
And you start to trust yourself more.
Thinking, acting, and leading in full alignment with the life you actually want.
🤲 Make the better voice louder
No doubt, we’ve all fallen for the lesser voice a couple of times.
But we can overcome that with a simple intentional routine.
These practices helped me master mindful connection with my non-negotiables (and can help you too):
- Get to know you more. What wouldn’t you trade for anything in this world? What don’t you give a damn about? These things form your priorities, values, and convictions, and they make up your non-negotiables. Get crystal clear on this, and you’ll be much more in control of your life.
- Listen to you before you act. If you’re caught between those voices, ask yourself: “Is this voice pulling me closer to my vision, values, and convictions?” “Or is it just protecting my comfort?” At this point, you already know what to choose.
- Train your mind to detach from the lesser voice. When you catch yourself slipping into excuses, you can pause and circle back to it later. Maybe step away for a few minutes, take a walk if you can, stretch, listen to a podcast, or jot down a single sentence about what matters most at that time. It’ll help to declutter and pull you back in control to analyze the situation clearly.
The goal is to always honor your non-negotiables.
And let it guide you forward.
💢 The choice is always yours
What version of you are you choosing right now?
The one that’s playing small or the one that knows it’s time to lead harder, risk bigger, and demand more?
This mind game doesn’t back down.
But it’s always your choice to choose what part of you is leading.
Just make sure your choice is feeding your vision and your potential at large.
As James Clear says, “Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become.”
So, which version of you are you voting for?
Choose your better self.
You’ve got this.
With appreciation,
Huw
