The subconscious killer of big dreams…

Hey Reader,

Elite performers know the thrill of building a big, bold plan.

The excitement of mapping out every detail, strategizing, analyzing every angle, revising, tweaking, and waiting for perfect completion.

It’s great to plan, but over-planning is the fastest way to stay stuck.

It gives you the illusion of progress without requiring the risk of action.

But it's costing you time, growth, and momentum.

Today we’ll discuss why over-planning happens, the toll it takes, and how to finally break free.

🗯️ The Plan That Never Took Off

An acquaintance recently told me about someone who came to her with a brilliant business idea.

He had notebooks full of market research, spreadsheets outlining financial projections, and a detailed five-year strategy.

But every time he thought about launching, he’d find “just one more thing” to perfect; revising strategy, or tweaking branding.

He kept saying “I need to perfect this” or “The time isn’t right.”

He was so afraid of missing a step or making a mistake that he never made a move.

Months turned into nearly a year, and by the time he was finally ready to act, he discovered a strikingly similar idea had already launched.

And that killed his momentum to this day.

He said it was too late, the market had moved on without him, and he felt sidelined.

He completely lost interest in his ten-month-old plan and predictions.

This is what over-planning can do.

🧠 Are You Over-Planning Your Success Away?

Every great success begins with a plan.

But for many entrepreneurs, planning becomes a way to avoid taking action.

It makes you think you’re being strategic. You’re mapping every detail, making backup plans, and ensuring nothing gets overlooked.

But then you delay taking the main action.

You tell yourself you need more clarity or more time to refine.

Suddenly, you’re trapped in a cycle of endless preparation.

Let’s be honest, this cycle often stems from fear. Fear of failure, uncertainty, or judgment.

But no amount of planning can account for a hundred percent success.

Markets shift, client needs evolve, and unexpected obstacles may arise.

Planning only gets you so far, but the messy, raw, and imperfect execution is where growth happens.

So every day spent over-planning is a day you’re not learning from real-world feedback, testing your ideas, or creating results.

And that gap between planning and action comes at a cost.

You begin to second-guess your ideas, procrastinate, and convince yourself that you’re just not ready yet.

The more you wait, the harder it becomes to act.

The confidence you once had starts to fade and doubt gradually creeps in.

You might not even realize what’s happening until the cost becomes obvious.

The lost time, missed opportunities, and the frustration of watching others succeed with less preparation.

Because you’ve been procrastinating under the guise of planning.

❤️ Action Over Perfection

Success doesn’t come from flawless plans.

When you step out of the strive for perfection, you become motivated to take messy, imperfect actions that move the needle.

You stop doubting yourself and start building confidence with every step forward, no matter how small.

This commitment to execute frees you from the pressure of getting it “just right.”

You’re creating, innovating, and moving closer to your vision.

Think about it:

Most of your biggest wins likely didn’t come from a perfect plan.

You seized the opportunity, adjusting on the fly, and winging it as you go.

Because perfection isn’t the goal, progress is.

That’s how you become a leader who thrives in uncertainty and adapts to challenges instead of running from them.

🤲 Step Into Action

It’s time to move from planning to doing.

Here are some practices that help me plan less and act more.

You can try them too:

  1. Launch with “B+” work: Stop aiming for an “A+.” Set a rule to release your work or project when it’s at 80% readiness. The extra 20% is where perfectionism lives and it rarely moves the needle. Think of the first draft of your plan as the beta version of your success. Put it out into the world and let the feedback shape it into something extraordinary.
  2. Create a decision sprint: Instead of wasting time agonizing over options, set a timer for 30 minutes to decide on ONE actionable step. No more, no less. Treat this like a game. When the timer’s up, the decision is final, and you must act on it. The clarity and momentum you gain from acting will outpace any hours spent overthinking.
  3. Make fear a partner: Acknowledging your fear disarms it. Every time hesitation creeps in, ask yourself: What am I afraid of? Imagine the worst-case scenario and plan for it briefly, but don’t linger. Then flip it. What’s the best-case scenario? Use the momentum from visualizing the success to act anyway.
  4. Visualize the actual worst-case scenario: Imagine six months later, you’re still in the same spot, endlessly refining a plan that never saw the light of day. Now contrast that with the version of you who took an imperfect action but is learning, growing, and building.

Which vision inspires you more?

Progress over planning, I bet.

🎯 Get Off The Sidelines

What’s one move you’ve been overthinking?

The next competitor you lose to isn’t necessarily because they’re smarter, more talented, or better prepared.

They’ll win because they acted while you hesitated.

You’ve already got everything you need.

The only thing holding you back is the decision to start.

So take that step today.

With appreciation,

Huw
