The DNFs (did not finish) in elite performance…

Hey Reader,

Something interesting came up on the podcast this week.

We were talking about DNFs. Did Not Finish.

It was in response to a listener’s question about our biggest running failures and achievements.

And my co-host shared a story about pulling out of a marathon halfway.

She was vomiting and retching pretty much from the start.

In that moment, she had two choices.

Slow down, walk, compose herself, and still cross the finish line, or quit the race entirely.

In her mind, there was this thought of, “I’m gonna do such a rubbish time here if I have to slow down and walk.”

So she quit.

She was genuinely sick.

Nobody is disputing that.

But the fear of finishing at a rubbish time was the real reason she quit the race.

Looking back, she thinks she could have just walked it out and still made it to the finish line.

For someone who considers herself mentally tough, she counts that as a failure.

🧠 The game of the mind

It’s really crazy what the brain does.

It gets better and better at giving us every logical reason to get out of pain.

It can feel like the right thing to do at the time.

But in reality, things get uncomfortable.

And your brain starts looking for a solid reason to take you out of that discomfort.

The good thing is, as we evolve, we become more aware of these mind tricks.

And we find it easier to overcome them.

🎯 Embrace the moments of failure

So what’s something you’ve walked away from recently that looked like the right decision?

Maybe it was.

Maybe it wasn’t.

But you won’t know until you’re honest with yourself about why you really walked away.

We shared our biggest failures and achievements, and the lessons we have (or have not) learned on our podcast this week.

We covered a lot more great topics too.

Hey Reader, My two best 100-mile races were in 2016 and 2022. And the funny thing is, they had one thing in common. I went into both of them with no real expectations. The one in 2016 was in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. My parents had flown out to watch me, and it was the only time they’d ever traveled to see me race. I just wanted to run with joy and appreciation. I wasn’t fixated on finishing in a specific time. I wanted my parents to be like… wow, Huw really ran with character and courage...

Hey Reader, There’s this famous motto of the San Antonio Spurs. “Pound the rock.” It’s this idea that with a hammer and the rock, you have to hit the rock a thousand times. And for 999 knocks on the rock, nothing happens. But you have to keep doing it anyway. Then one more hit, the rock breaks, and you have the impact. I was thinking about this the other weekend when San Antonio won game seven of the Western Conference Finals. The city was buzzing about it, and watching it, all I kept...

Hey Reader, Something came up on this week’s pod that I thought was worth sharing. A fitness influencer posted about how taking three glasses of wine destroyed his sleep and WHOOP, and it took him five days to recover. It sure caused a stir. The people who are sober hit everyone with the “Yeah, drinking is the worst”, and the people who drink were like, "Sober people are the most boring losers in the world". Someone my pod co-host and I respect and align with wrote about this: “This is...
